How to Perform Umrah: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners
Umrah is a beautiful spiritual journey that can be undertaken at any time of the year. Unlike Hajj, which is a mandatory pillar of Islam performed during specific dates, Umrah is highly recommended and offers immense rewards. Here is a simplified step-by-step guide for performing Umrah.
1. Entering the State of Ihram
Before crossing the Miqat boundary, pilgrims must cleanse themselves, wear the two plain white sheets of Ihram (for men), and declare their intention (Niyyah) by reciting: "Labbayk Allahumma Umrah". Once in Ihram, recite the Talbiyah continuously.
2. Tawaf around the Kaaba
Upon arriving at Masjid Al Haram, enter with your right foot. Proceed to the Kaaba and perform seven counter-clockwise circuits starting from the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). Reflect on your sins and supplicate from the heart.
3. Prayers behind Maqam Ibrahim
After completing Tawaf, offer two units of prayer behind Maqam Ibrahim (or anywhere in the mosque), then drink Zamzam water.
4. Sa'ee between Safa and Marwa
Walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa, recalling the devotion of Hajar (HA) as she searched for water. Start at Safa and end at Marwa.
5. Halq or Taqsir (Shaving or Clipping Hair)
To exit the state of Ihram, men should shave their heads (preferred) or clip their hair equally. Women clip a finger-tip length of their hair. Your Umrah is now complete!
